Here's what some of our employees have to say about the career and personal development opportunities they've received while at the KCOM Group:
"I started at KCOM Group from University in 2003. Within six months, I began my management career in operations. I later moved in to more strategic and commercial roles in Marketing. KCOM Group has shown great faith in me and has been committed to helping me develop my management skills and commercial knowledge. The KCOM Group has given me the skills and confidence to tackle some very large scale projects in new and innovative ways. I have learnt to become more inquisitive, challenging, hard working and collaborative; to not just accept the status quo and to always strive for the best. In the past three years I have focussed on digital marketing and website optimisation. I get to deal with a wide range of issues that keep me on my feet and constantly growing personally and professionally. I have a lot more to learn, and new opportunities to go at, but am confident that KCOM Group will be there to support me."
Paul Nickerson, Usability and Web Optimisation Manager
"I've been at KCOM since 2000 and have had some excellent training and development during my time here. KCOM Group has helped my career development by retraining me in PRINCE2 project management methodology (foundation and practitioner) and subsequently the tailored developing management excellence course. I've also been lucky enough to be sponsored on the Executive MBA programme at Hull University Business School."
Paul Murphy, Senior Project Manager, Group Services
"I joined the company in 2003 as a Modern Apprentice. It’s a friendly and fun place to work and my job is extremely varied with great opportunities to travel around the business and meet different people. The company has always encouraged me to progress and has supported me in all aspects of training to develop my knowledge within my role.”
Mark Blenkinsop, Assistant Regional Property Co-ordinator, Group Services
"I began my career at KCOM Group in 2000 as a Customer Service Engineer moving on to a Senior Engineer role before recently becoming a Regional Engineering Team Leader. KCOM Group has provided an excellent career path and opportunities, not only with Nortel and Cisco technical training and manufacture accreditation but also external management training to help develop my new role."
Chris Delahoyde, Manager of Engineering Services, Kcom
"I began working at KCOM Group as Marketing Assistant and after just over a year was promoted to Marketing Executive and then to Marketing Manager just over two years later. I have taken part in various training courses such as Writing for Digital Media, Exhibitions Masterclass and my Certificate in Digital Marketing which have all helped towards my progression."
Claire Holmes, Marketing Manager, Kcom
"I have been at KCOM Group since 1999, selling the Hull Colour and White Pages directories and Internet products. I started as a Trainee in Telesales, as I had no previous sales experience and through internal and external training courses progressed to a Field Sales Account Executive position. In the last few years with the help and support of my manager, I have been promoted again to a Senior Account Executive in the Publishing Services area of the business. A personal achievement of mine was when I was nominated by the management team for the KCOM Group 'Employee of the year Award'. It was nice to know that although the KCOM Group is a very large company, you do get recognition for the work and effort you put in."
Clare Wilson, Account Executive, KC
“I love working within the KC brand because I am initially from a competitor and have many services with them, and to compare the 2, we are so much better in every single way, our customer service, technical support and the products we offer are so much better, which makes me proud to be part of the company!!!”
John Langham, Customer Service Advisor, KC
I love working within the KC brand because it’s like a big family! It’s an eclectic mix of people all pulling together for the greater good. With people ranging from the serious uncle, the nutty cousin and the newlings who have yet to grow. Changes are constant keeping me alert at all times and I feel I can ‘have my say’ and ‘be heard’. I have been at KC for 22 years and in that time I have evolved from an excitable teenager into a passionate ‘lady’. I feel that ‘I fit in’ well and that’s why I have stayed for the duration.
Sharon Sandford, Payments Consultant, KC
The people I work with are fantastic, and there’s a sense that every door is open; Not just in terms of accessing staff, but in terms of career path. KC actively encourages individuals to find their niche, whether that’s in your current department or elsewhere, which is something I’ve experienced nowhere else. KC wants you to excel, and reward good work with great feedback – Something many organisations forget to do!
What I love about coming to work every day is the diversity of projects I’m involved in, as well as a strong sense of feeling valued by the organisation; I feel as though my work is contributing to something.
Anthony Cross, Market & Consumer Analyst, KC
KCOM Group encourages innovation and value employees’ views and ideas to continually improve the brand experience for our customers.
It is a great company to work for as the organisation promotes a “can-do” attitude where individuals at all levels can and do make a real difference.
Steve Allbones, General Manager – Publishing Manager, KC
I love working for KCOM Group as my induction training was overlooking a football pitch (KC Stadium) so it was a heavenly intro to the company, the fact that I feel valued, and the canteen has lovely soup. All very random, but all very true! And the staff are great, some real characters.
Michael Sharpe, Media Sales Executive, KC
I love working for KCOM Group because it is an organisation that has ambition. As a company it engages with its people to drive success and understands that without great people it won’t succeed.
Clodagh Murphy, Director of Eclipse, KC
I really love working for the KCOM Group because it’s full of great people with great attitudes, everyone is friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about their work. KCOM Group creates a very supportive environment and really takes care of its staff; I’ve been given lots of opportunities to develop my skills and experience and progress my career. Plus after living in Hull all of my life, I’m very proud to be working for such a successful local company which really cares about the local community.
Helen Wales, Resourcing & Process Improvement Manager,Group Services
I love working for KCOM Group because every day is different and I get to work with a large number of different people on a variety of projects. In addition I work in a really good team of people who are very dedicated and enthusiastic, but also fun to work with. The type of business is such that I am able to influence things in my area and can talk to those people who have the power to change things.
Jeremy Parkin, Business Solutions Delivery Director, Group Services
I love working for KCOM Group because since joining as a uni leaver I’ve developed a wide range of knowledge and experience and have loads of support whether it’s from the people sat next to me or from the wider team in different areas of the country. The people I work with are what make me happy to come to work every day! I’ve also been given the chance to extend my skills and knowledge by being involved with the recruitment team as well as Group HR Services. Working for a business like KCOM Group, which has several divisions, I get to talk to a wide range of people and help them with different issues.
Jo Charlesworth, HR Advisor, Group Services
Everyone is willing to help, whether it’s other members of my team, my manager, or people within other departments around the organisation.
Leila Kheder, HR Advisor, Group Services
Why do I love to work for KCOM Group? It’s actually an easy and simple answer: the people. I love the fact that Kcom is not a company that is interested in simply selling “stuff”, but it’s a company filled with a relatively small group of people interested in using technology to make a difference. Since my time at Kcom I can honestly say I’ve never had that Monday morning feeling. It’s a place where you can always pick up the phone (sometimes at stupid times of the night) and still find people who are more than willing to help you out.
Stu Smith, Principal Specialist - Unified Communications & Collaboration , Kcom
Our breadth and depth of portfolio is second to none. We have really embraced technology and, unlike many of our competitors actually use the technology that we sell – Unified Comms really has changed the way in which we work and collaborate for the better. The focus and commitment to our Managed Service customers allows us to really work very closely with them, often as an extension of their own team. This allows us to alter our sales and support focus as the needs of our customers change over time. Our ‘can do, will do’ attitude ensures that we are keen to try new things and innovate.
Marc Lawton, Technical Design Consultant, Kcom
I LOVE working for Kcom as I think we have such a fantastic opportunity in the marketplace which makes it very exciting. Having worked for much larger organisations, I love the fact that whilst we have such an enormous end to end capability we can also be so flexible and agile around our customers’ requirements and we are not restricted in our efforts to always work to the right solution, even if that is not standard. In particular I really enjoy the people I work with and the relationships that I have built up over the last 11 years!
Sara Birch, Sales Specialist – Mobility, Kcom
I’m given the responsibility to manage my own time and placement. This gives me flexibility around the hours and locations I work and Kcom the flexibility for me to work the long hours when we are up against it. It’s a transaction that works well. With this flexibility I’m also able to achieve a good work life balance, with my home life, outside hobbies and pursuits. Maintaining the balance is key to keeping fresh and motivated in an ever changing industry. In eight years I’ve worked in three positions and learned loads. Kcom's approach and rewards depends on your own motivation but, with the right effort, you can get involved in all areas of the business, even outside your own expertise and you will be rewarded. With the right mentality you will receive the recognition and the respect of your peers for the effort you contribute. I don’t work for the company, along with all my colleagues we are the company.
Alex Castle-Mason, Solutions Manager, Kcom
I have worked for Kcom (and its previous iterations) for over 16 years and still love the buzz and challenge that daily life brings. We have a great team of people, a good mix of people like myself (who have been around for a while) as well as some fresh faces – it’s a great mix of experience and new ideas.
When we all pull together, we are a fantastic team. One of the cultural benefits of working for Kcom is that work is an activity, not a location – enabling me to be flexible and get the job done from wherever we may physically be working.
Neil Bowes, Solutions Manager Team Leader, Kcom
One of the main reasons I love working for Kcom is that is has a great ability to continue challenging me in my personal development and way of thinking. Kcom manages do this in a way that makes me feel I have 110% support from my manager and the various teams I work with so I never feel alone or exposed as I learn. I also love working for Kcom because of the people I work with – that’s the main reason I haven’t left this organisation for 10+ years! The people are great – whenever there’s a need, they fulfil (whatever time of the day); whenever there’s an escalation, it’s managed – everyone gets involved when needed. Everyone is flexible and passionate about what we do and prepared to go the extra mile. That is what makes Kcom great.
