KCOM product manager Lucy Henn

Lucy, 26, has been nominated as one of the region’s Top 30 Under 30, a scheme to highlight the best up-and-coming talent within the Hull and Humber business community.

The scheme was designed to showcase the next generation of business leaders and show there are career opportunities and the potential to prosper in the Humber region.

We spent five minutes with Lucy to find out what she thinks about being recognised as one of the region’s best young business talents – and her plans for the future.

Tell us about yourself

I started with KCOM in November 2018 and had never worked in telecoms prior – I previously sold plastic and cars (not together!). I’d always lived in Hull and went to Hull University so working for KCOM was super exciting to me.

What is your role at KCOM?

I am a Product Manager and focus particularly on Wi-Fi and connectivity products and propositions. I work collaboratively with all internal teams and different suppliers to deliver new products to our customers as well as evolving existing ones. My first big project at KCOM was launching a new Business Lightstream portfolio.

What do you enjoy about your job?

There are lots of things to choose from. My top three are:
(i) Being able to engage and work with teams throughout the business.
(ii) My team – we’re a really close team and each one of us brings difference experience and skills.
(iii) I’m able to make a real difference – for example we led some key Covid-19 initiatives to aid our customers during the pandemic.

How have you grown professionally since joining KCOM?

The opportunities I’ve been given at KCOM have grown my confidence so much. I’ve been able to engage with so many different stakeholders and vendors, plus work and lead on some fantastic projects. My career at KCOM so far has shown me how to aim high, set high standards and how rewarding my role can be.

What opportunities does working here in the Humber region bring?

We have some fantastic tech companies within Humber and so many businesses at the forefront of their industry. It’s a really exciting region, especially for young people at the beginning of their careers.

What have been the challenges of working through the Covid-19 pandemic? Has it affected your daily job?

One of the main challenges has been not being able to get teams in a room to brainstorm. However, it’s taught me how adaptable we all are, and how important engagement and communication is.

Has it been tough?

Yes, absolutely. I work closely with people I’ve never actually met in person, and you have to really train yourself to switch off on an evening. But what I love now is that people are so much more open to talking about their mental health which is a big step forward.

How does it feel to be chosen for the Top 30 Under 30 list?

Incredible and it makes me so proud. I really didn’t expect it, and I’m so grateful to Kaylene (Potts – KCOM’s head of products and propositions) for the nomination. It shows how hard work is recognised and celebrated in KCOM and across the region.

What advice would you give other young people who are starting their careers?

Don’t expect to know what you want to do from the day you begin your career - and take every opportunity you can get. There is no harm in exploring different avenues, but make sure you find something you love – even if it means taking some calculated risks.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

This is really difficult one! The last 12 months have taught me you can never predict the future. I’ll be happy if in ten years I’ve progressed in my career and can lead a team which makes a real difference both internally and with customers.
